Spay & Neuter Facts

🐶🐱 Health Benefits

  • Spaying (females) helps prevent uterine infections and mammary tumors, which are malignant in ~50% of dogs and 90% of cats.

  • Neutering (males) prevents testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems.

  • Spayed/neutered pets often live longer, healthier lives (dogs: 1–3 years longer; cats: 3–5 years longer on average).

🛑 Behavioral Benefits

  • Reduces roaming: Neutered males are less likely to wander or escape in search of a mate.

  • Decreases aggression and territorial marking in both dogs and cats.

  • Less yowling, spraying, and heat-related behaviors in unspayed female cats.

🏥 Population Control

  • One unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce over 400,000 cats in 7 years.

  • One unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce up to 67,000 puppies in 6 years.

  • Millions of healthy animals are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year due to overpopulation.

💲 Cost Savings

  • Preventing litters reduces the financial burden on shelters and communities.

  • Spay/neuter is more affordable than caring for a litter or treating health problems later in life.

🧠 Myths Debunked

  • Myth: "It's better to let a female have one litter first."
Fact: Medical studies show no health benefit to this.

  • Myth: "It will change my pet's personality."
Fact: It may reduce unwanted behaviors but won’t change your pet’s core personality.

  • Myth: "It's too expensive."
Fact: Many organizations offer low-cost or free spay/neuter services.
